Last night was the Grade 3-6 performing arts event at BHPS.

We had an awesome night and I have to say that I thought 3A were AMAZING!

3A danced to Bear Necessities and Hot, Hot, Hot!

The music was great and the performers even better. Congratulations to all of the students and thank you to all of the teachers, especially Miss Curtain for all of her preparation.

What did you like most about our concert?

Reader’s Workshop

I have not posted many entries about Reading lately, so thought I would show what a typical morning in 3A looks like.

This week our Learning Focus is to recognise character’s traits in Author’s writing.

In our class we have four groups who are grouped according to the goal that they re working on. We then focus on that goal during Guided and Independent Reading sessions. During the week each group rotates through activities based on our Learning Focus.

This morning we had one group doing Reader’s Theatre (the play they chose was Rapunzal)

Here they are rehearsing outside. We thought and talked about the traits of the main characters and really enjoyed it when Rapunzal was performed to our class.

This group were reading passages and identifying the traits that the characters displayed.

This group were doing activities with their spelling words. Some of the activities included using 7 words and writing a short story, making a comic strip with their words, words in alphabetical order, breaking up their words etc.

This group were doing Guided Reading. We looked at a procedural text and focussed on monitoring and re-reading (if words don’t look or sound right or don’t make sense).

When students finish their activity they do Independent Reading, focussing on our Learning Goal.

Silly Science Slime!

IMG_1455 IMG_1453 IMG_1452Here is the slime recipe, it is a bit different to the one that we used in class. We found out that slime is a solid AND a liquid! It is a non-newtonian visco-elastic fluid! Now try saying that!?

We were told to be very careful with our slime and of the need to wash our hands after playing with it and to keep it away from small children.

Which science experiment did you like the most?

Silly Science

This Term the Grade 3 students at BHPS have been investigating Solids, Liquids and Gases.

Today we had a Science Incursion. It was really fun and we got to do lots of experiments.

I think that I am safe to say that our favorite experiment was making rockets…..

Making Rockets

You will need:

A film canister and lid

Bicarb. Soda

Vinegar

Procedure:

Place about 1/4 of a teaspoon of bicarb into the canister lid, flatten it.

Fill the canister to about 1/4 full with vinegar.

Put the lid on, quickly shake, place, lid side down on a surface and move away quickly.

Watch your rocket soar into the sky!

Helpful hint: Move away quickly as you may be injured if the canister hits you!

We made our own rockets using a small, cylinder shaped container with a rubber stopper.

Mindfulness Sparkle Jars

Today we made Glitter Jars in class – Lily’s mum told us about this activity after she did a Positive Education Course. Thank you Penny!

The idea is that sometimes our thoughts, stresses or worries can “cloud” our perspective and we can’t see through the cloud (just like the glitter when the bottle is shaken).

But when we wait a few seconds, we watch the glitter settle. We take time, feel our breathing and rest. things seem clearer, just like our glitter jars.

Have you used your sparkle jar yet?

Did it help you to feel settled?

Procedural Writing – How to make Slime

We are learning how to write procedural texts in writing this week.

Yesterday, with 3B, we made slime. First we made predictions (hypothesis) as to what would happen when we added water to cornflour. Some predicted that that it would become sticky or runny and they were right!

Here is our slime making procedural text.

Making Slime

You will need:

Water

Cornflour

Food colouring

Cup

Jug

Bowl

Procedure

1.Put 1 cup of cornflour into the bowl

2. Add about a cup of water but you may need to add more.

3. Stir it around until really thick

4. Put 5 drops of food colouring in the bowl

5. Stir some more

Enjoy playing with your slime!

Thanks Miss Petz for organising this experiment for us!
