Recently I came across a blog article wherein the author made the simple observation that by raising kind children, we are also raising adults who are happy.
By explaining and understanding the science behind kindness, both adults and children, respectively, can comprehend the supporting evidence and become more likely to use kindness in their everyday lives. The person who gives kindness receives the benefit of feeling fantastic through the release of chemicals including serotonin, endorphins and oxytocin. These have their own, differing effects which can include increases in happiness, positive feelings and satisfaction.
Witnessing and receiving acts of kindness can have similar effects and inspire others to “pay the kindness forward.” Younger children can be encouraged to see kindness as their superpower or chief character strength and be proud of this personal ability. By modelling kind words and acts to children and others “what goes around comes around” and maybe the world could become a kinder place.
