Love of Learning

People who possess the character strength love of learning are motivated to acquire new skills or knowledge or to build on their existing skills or knowledge. They feel good when they are learning new things.

If Love of Learning is your top Character Strength this means that you love learning new things whether in a class or on your own. You love school, reading and museums, in fact anywhere there is an opportunity to learn!

You can use this character strength to reflect on the topics that they have enjoyed learning about most this year.

Gratitude

In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.

Simply stopping and mindfully pausing during your day and thinking about things that you are grateful for can increase your positive emotions.

What are you grateful for right now?

Leadership

At this time of the year at school “Leadership” is on everyone’s minds as the process to choose Captains for the next year is in full swing.

People who are good leaders are able to organise their group and make sure that everyone feels included.

We can all think of people we admire who are great leaders such as our parents, family members, teachers and public figures. Nelson Mandela is one who springs to mind for me.

“The Lorax” is a great example of leadership. The main character is upstanding, inspiring and brave enough to do what’s right.

Positive bystanders are also good leaders as they stand up for what they know to be right.

Modesty

People who are modest let their accomplishments or positive attributes speak for themselves, whilst also recognising the work of others. It is also about realising you are just one member of a team.

Ideas to practice modesty include:

Identify a friend or family member who is humble. Consider the ways they achieve this.

Notice if you speak more than others when in a group.

Admit your mistakes, be honest.

Celebrate someone else’s success.

I’m not sure that the characters in these books demonstrate modesty – what do you think?
