MIndfulness

Mindfulness can be a useful tool for promoting wellbeing. Mindfulness is a simple technique that emphasises paying attention to the present moment in an accepting, nonjudgmental manner.

Mindfulness with children offers opportunities for them to be peaceful, kind and accepting.

At BHPS, many classes practise mindfulness in its various forms. The article below offers some ideas for home and school.

A cute clip to introduce mindfulness to younger children.

How do you use mindfulness in your every day life?

Do you stop and pay attention during your day?

Have a go at a breathing exercise. How did you feel afterwards?

Staying positive during tricky times

Here are some tips that you could try….

  1. Focus on small things and savour them (eg tastes and smells)
  2. Think of three things that you are grateful for
  3. Remember three good things that happened to you in the past.
  4. Talk to your family/friends. A good conversation can boost your wellbeing.
  5. Look for the good in others (identify their strengths & tell them).
  6. Distract yourself – do something else that makes you think of other things
  7. Try some mindful meditation – use an app such as insight timer or smiling minds
  8. Tidy up your space
  9. Get off your computer/iphone/ipad – read a book, have a chat, go outside
  10. Appreciate nature

What helps you to feel happy?

Character Strengths

Watch Eva’s story.

You could make a clip of yourself talking about your character strengths.

What are your top 3 character strengths? (Hint: The Character Strengths are in your diary)

Can you describe a time where you have used one (or more) of your character strengths?

Can you remember character strength spotting in your friends or family? Describe what happened.

Which character strengths would you like to work on? (i.e. what are your goal strengths).

Teamwork

Teamwork means being a great team mate, doing your share and getting people to work well together.

People with teamwork as their top strength excel as a member of a group. They are loyal and dedicated teammates, they always do their part, they work hard for the success of their group.

The key concepts of teamwork involve:

  • Citizenship: responsibility toward one’s community
  • Loyalty: unwavering trust for a group
  • Patriotism: loyalty toward one’s homeland/nation without hostility toward other nations.

Teamwork is also closely related to the sense of belonging.

Persistence

Being persistent means working hard to finish what we set out to achieve and not giving up. It means setting and achieving goals despite challenges and difficulties. Being persistent involves “grit” which is similar to stamina and effort. People who show persistence have a growth mindset, they know that if they practise and put in effort, they can achieve their goals!
